The Un-Truth Of Advertising

You all have seen those cute commercials with the FreeCreditReport.com guy. You know the cutie with his homies that can't get a car because his credit is so whacked? Working in a restaurant singing in a pirate outfit. There you go now you know who I am talking about. The little dittie that he sings is all over the place in every home it seems. Even my children younger and older were singing around the house about FreeCreditReport.com and being free. It is a cute commercial and very catchy. One thing that got me was the fact that they said it was free and it wasn't. Before the commercials ever aired I and my oldest daughter went to get this free credit report. Did we ever get it? NO. Oh, we were charged for a monthly charge, which at the time was $9.95 and now it is $14.95. We both called and canceled. I was told some story about it being sent via email, then by mail. Yea, right. Never got this free report.

Now they are doing it all over again and with much more success. In fact the guy that is singing isn't even singing I guess. Wow. But all the hoopla over this guy being French Canadian, faking and that in fact FreeCreditReport is making a mint on actually promoting their service by actually showing identity theft is amazing to me.

BUT this is marketing in advertising. I went over and read the entire article about this and had to laugh. Identity theft is very serious yet the only true free service available it appears is a service called lifelock. There are paid options and programs though.

If you wish you really should go over and read the article about this. It is pretty interesting. Also, if you are worried about your identity being stolen then maybe it is time for you to enroll in the Lifelock service that is real. Not promoting anything other than protecting your credit and good name.

About the time that we were having problems with this not for free report, I wish that I had read the articles that Bob Sullivan, New York Times bestselling author had written about this service. Would have saved myself and daughter time and trouble on a service that mis-represents what free really is

Did you know you can get a free copy of your credit report once a year (or whenever you receive a credit denial based on information on your credit report) from your local credit bureau?
